Vampires and werewolves and zombies—oh, my!

peta2-loving hottie Christian Serratos won over diehard fans of theTwilight series while playing Angela Weber opposite Kristen Stewart, and now she will be joining the cast of the hit AMC drama The Walking Dead.

As a vegetarian, Christian knows that flesh is for zombies, and her body is no graveyard.

The hordes of undead chowing down on fingers and thighs on The Walking Dead may not be real, but unless you’re eating meat-free meals, you may as well consider yourself a zombie—you’re eating flesh!

Chicken fingers? Boneless ribs? Think about it! If that doesn’t make you want to go vegan, this video will:

If you respect life, join Christian and go vegetarian! Try these frightfully delicious vegan recipes, and don’t forget to tune in to watch Christian Serratos take on the zombie apocalypse on season four of AMC’s The Walking Dead.

Rise Against Takes On CU-Boulder

Rise against animal testing breaks hearts psa

Left to right: Brandon Barnes, Zach Blair, Tim McIlrath, Joe Principe

The University of Colorado–Boulder (CU-Boulder) states that its institutional vision includes “[b]uilding a 21st century learning environment.” As far as peta2 is concerned, torturing animals in classroom experiments is archaic and anything but indicative of a state-of-the-art institution.

In cruel classroom experiments at CU-Boulder:

  • Students cut off frogs’ heads and experiment on the animals’ muscles, skin, and nerves.
  • Terrified rats are forced to swim in water mazes.
  • Live rats are cut open in order to apply drugs to their exposed, beating hearts.

Cruelty-free, non-animal teaching methods are available and have been shown to teach students as well as or better than animal-based lessons. This kind of archaic treatment of animals in the name of “science” cannot continue, and no one agrees more than CU-Boulder alumni and Rise Against drummer Brandon Barnes, which is why he sent off the following letter to the Office of the Chancellor at CU-Boulder on behalf of peta2 and animals everywhere:

After spending the last 14 years playing drums in the band Rise Against, whose primary messages are about fighting injustice, I feel compelled to weigh in on this important issue.

Brandon barnes cu boulder letter

Rise Against is a band known for its commitment to fighting injustices—against humans and animals alike. A longtime animal activist, Brandon knows that to be truly forward-thinking, institutions such as CU-Boulder need to extend their ideals of higher education to include compassion and respect for all animals and to put an end to these archaic classroom experiments.

Live animals are being ripped apart in a Rockland, Maine, slaughterhouse.

A recent PETA investigation uncovered horrific treatment of lobsters and crabs at a Linda Bean slaughterhouse in Maine. The investigative video footage shows animals being ripped apart while they’re alive and struggling. In response, thousands of compassionate people are crying out in protest—including Twilight star and animal activist Kellan Lutz.

Kellan Lutz PETA

I watched as conscious lobsters were torn apart by your employees, who then threw them into dumpsters to die slowly and painfully, treating them as if they were trash rather than living beings.

Studies have shown that all animals have the capacity to experience pain and suffering—that includes crustaceans such as crabs and lobsters.

When PETA investigated the slaughterhouse doing business as Linda Bean’s Maine Lobster, they uncovered  the following:

  • Lobsters’ heads were ripped from their bodies and dropped into bins, along with their abdomens. Their antennae and legs continued to move after their bodies had been torn apart.
  • Workers slammed live crabs onto spikes to break off their top shells and shoved the animals’ exposed organs and flesh against rapidly spinning brushes. The crabs were then tossed onto a conveyor belt and dumped—alive—into boiling water.

peta2′s annual Libby Awards are in full swing, which means that we’re asking you guys to vote on your favorite peta2 ads, animal-friendly bands, and of course, swoon-worthy celebs to help us decide who we should choose as the winners.

In addition to peta2 nominees such as Disney Channel star China Anne McClain and vegan mama Tia Mowry, lots of other celebs made headlines this week for their own good deeds! Let’s check out the highlights:

kanye-woodlands-bistro-pic

As a notorious fur-wearer, Kanye West is not always on peta2′s “nice” list, but finding out that the D.C. stop of his current tour was catered by local vegan eatery Woodlands Vegan Bistro won him some points in our book! Maybe all that BBQ tofu, sweet kale salad, and vegan mac and cheese will sway Yeezy over to the vegan side. ;)

More and more compassionate celebs are speaking out against SeaWorld after watching the heartbreaking documentary Blackfish. The latest name to add to that list is Teen Wolf cutie Dylan O’Brien. As if we didn’t have a big enough crush on him already!

Peta celebrity stamp series

PETA rolled out its latest celebrity stamp series, which features Mayim Bialik, Joaquin Phoenix, Sarah Silverman, Bob Barker, and more. They’re the perfect stamps to mail with your PETA holiday cards. :)

Vampire Diaries star and animal crusader Ian Somerhalder—alongside his kitty companion, Moke—proved that cat people are the hottest people in a recent interview with People magazine. We couldn’t agree more!

peta2 pals The Summer Set were tapped to fill in for Joan Jett on the South Dakota float in last week’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The float may have lost one badass vegan rocker in Joan Jett, but it gained a band full of awesome, animal-loving stars! Check out the full performance here.

Judging by the excessive amount of times that I’ve played Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” this month, the countdown to Christmas has begun! If you made it onto the “nice” list this year, it’s time to set your sights on some animal-friendly goodies to go under the tree.

Why Ian Somerhalder Is the Best Ever

“Our youth are the most undervalued and underutilized resource that we can possibly imagine.”

Ian somerhalder starmax 2013Photo by: KGC-11/starmaxinc.com ©2013

Vampire Diaries star Ian Somerhalder—also known as Boone to all the Lost fans out there!—is making a run at being crowned peta2′s favorite person, like, ever. Through his commitment to the Ian Somerhalder Foundation, he works to raise awareness of issues threatening animals and the environment.

In a recent question-and-answer session originally posted on Quora, Ian spoke passionately about ways to fight cruelty to animals and why the world’s youth is primed and ready to take on the challenge!

Animal cruelty is one of the most unfortunate and barbaric demonstrations of human beings manipulating ill conceived notions of ‘power’ over other species. There is a lot we can do to fight this.

We need to support companies that we know do NOT test on animals, work with local shelters and rescues who aid many of our abused, neglected and abandoned creatures, refuse to support factory farms, fight for anti-cruelty laws on all levels of government, and even keep a watchful eye on our neighborhoods looking for reportable signs of animal cruelty.

When asked about how to motivate young people to take action, Ian answered with something that peta2 has known for years:

Our youth are the most undervalued and underutilized resource that we can possibly imagine. They are fully stocked with passion far beyond what we tend to recognize.

I couldn’t agree more! peta2 is possible because of YOU. The actions of peta2 Street Teamers and hundreds of thousands of supporters have directly resulted in animals being saved from fur farms, testing facilities, roadside zoos, classroom dissections, and the list goes on and on. Cute Overload: Carrie Underwood and Puppies

If you told me I could never sing again, I’d say that was horrible, but it’s not my life. If you told me I could never be around animals again, I would just die.

Carrie Underwood and shelter puppies?! It’s almost too cute to handle.

The vegan country star is an outspoken animal advocate who has adopted dogs of her own, and this week, she spent some time volunteering at a local animal shelter and giving lots of hugs and love to puppies in need of new homes.

What better way to kick off the new year—and get started on those resolutions!—than by volunteering to help animals? Shelters all around the country need caring cuties like YOU to help keep their facilities clean, comfort animals, take dogs on walks, donate supplies, and more. Channel your inner Underwood and start making a difference for animals today!

I know I’m not alone in saying, “Ugh,Valentine’s Day,” along with engaging in some grumbling and serious eye-rolling, when it comes to February 14—but it’s not all bad!

I mean, sure, those candy hearts are actually kind of gross, and everyone parading around with flowers and teddy bears is mildly vomit-inducing, but it’s also an excuse to buy vegan chocolates and get crafty with homemade Valentine’s Day cards!

Pink Celebrates The End of Horse Carriage Cruelty

After showcasing powerhouse vocals during a breathtaking Oscars performance, Pink is using her time in the spotlight to help free horses used in New York City’s carriage industry.

In a guest blog post written exclusively for PETA, Billboard‘s “Woman of the Year” lends support to newly elected New York Mayor Bill de Blasio and praises his efforts to help the 220 horses who are suffering on the streets of New York:

Join Pink in Signing the Petition to Ban Horse-Drawn Carriages Heroes Featured Image

Watching a horse gallop in a field is one of the most calming sights imaginable. Watching a horse dodging traffic—nose to tailpipe and spooked by horns, sirens and pounding music—is one of the most upsetting.

I grew up caring for horses and mucking stalls for my aunt, who owns a horse farm in North Carolina. I learned that horses are very social herd animals who, by nature, spend their days grazing, playing and running together. Sadly, there are 220 horses in New York City enduring a miserable, solitary life shackled to a carriage and forced to navigate midtown traffic in all weather extremes, just to pull heavy loads of tourists.

Routine accidents have left horses dead and people in the hospital. After hours, the horses don’t live in barns but in cramped stalls in an old tenement building, without even enough room to stretch out.

Please join me in showing unified support for Mayor de Blasio and his commitment to giving the 220 affected horses the peaceful retirement that they deserve. You can show your gratitude by tweeting a message to @BilldeBlasio and using the hashtag #TYDeBlasio.

26 Super-Cute and Totally Awesome Animal Facts

0
0

Animals are pretty much the coolest—for real, they’re the best. Whether you’re talking about cats, cows, crabs, or another animal, there are a million ways in which animals are funny, sweet, loving, sneaky, silly, and sometimes even downright weird.

Here are just a few of the ways in which the animal kingdom makes us say, “For real?!”

1. One researcher described how a male bonobo who slapped a female was chased down by five unrelated females. That’s what’s up!

2. Wolves are awesome dads. When pups are born, papa wolves will guard the family in the den, bring home food for the kiddos, and serve as a mentor for pack members.

3. On farm sanctuaries, turkeys have been known to single out their favorite visitors and will come running to greet them upon arrival. Awwww!

male turkey with hearts

4. Humans aren’t alone in mourning the loss of a friend. Nonhuman primates have been observed holding wakes and turning to friends for comfort in response to the death of a loved one. :(

5. Mice like to play! In one study, an exercise wheel was set up in an outdoor space and wild mice were all about it. “Mice run in the wheel; they never just walk,” said researchers. “They are frequently observed leaving the wheel, and immediately going back in, suggesting it is a voluntary act.”

6. Cows have panoramic vision, which means they can see more than 300 degrees at a time, compared to only about 140 degrees for humans. Take that, iPhone panoramic!

7. Wild dolphins off the coast of Australia have been known to get crafty in the kitchen, using sea sponges to find fish hiding in the sand.

8. Hippos can spend all day in the sun without burning, so scientists are trying to copy a molecule in their sweat that seems to serve not only as a super-sunblock but also as an insect repellent. Pretty cool!

9. Would you send a pig to preschool? You could! According to animal behaviorists, pigs are smarter than 3-year-old children.

pigs running

10. Elephants and chimpanzees have been found to work cooperatively to get food. They will wait for someone else to come along if they get there first. Snack time is serious business.

11. Rats make great friends. In lab studies (ugh!), rats have been known to open other rats’ cage doors to come to their aid.

12. Cats have excellent memories and are able to remember incidents years after they’ve occurred, so be nice!

newman-pissed copy

13. If you’ve ever yawned after someone else did (what’s up with that, anyway?), then you have something in common with monkeys, parrots, and dogs, who all appear to “catch” yawning as well.

14. Many animals can see ultraviolet light, even though it’s invisible to humans.

15. Much like humans do in high school, chickens—who can remember the faces and ranks of more than 100 other birds—form complex social hierarchies, with every chicken knowing his or her place on the social ladder.

16. Like humans, lobsters carry eggs for nine months, have a long childhood, and can live for 100 years or longer—if they manage to avoid being ripped apart and eaten!

17. Clams can change gender once during their lifetime … but only from male to female. Wise choice, fellas.

18. Ants are wonderful gardeners. They grow mushrooms to feed their colonies, which require a sophisticated system of 2,000 chambers, vents, and tunnels to control humidity and temperature. That puts my windowsill cactus graveyard to shame.

19. When squirrels know that they are being watched by potential thieves, they will pretend to bury an acorn while actually concealing it in their mouth.

20. Just like humans, lobsters are for the most part either right-handed or left-handed. Some will have the crusher claw (their dominant claw) on the right side while others will have it on the left. Some lobsters are even ambidextrous!

21. The migration of monarch butterflies takes longer than their life spans. The butterflies migrate up to hundreds or even thousands of miles every year from Canada to Mexico, but individual butterflies do not make the entire round trip because of their short life spans.

22. While hibernating, little brown bats can reduce their heart rate from 200 to 20 beats per minute and can even stop breathing for approximately 45 minutes. This state of regulated hypothermia allows the bats to survive through periods of food scarcity and can last from a few hours to a few months.

23. Humans aren’t the only ones to use music to “set the mood.” The males of certain spider species pluck their web like a guitar to attract females. I guess even female spiders are suckers for a dude in a band. ;)

24. Crocodiles can potentially live forever. The gradual deterioration of the body caused by aging (aka getting old!) that occurs in humans does not occur in crocodiles. Crocs die only from disease, accidents, starvation, or predation. Sea urchins, lobsters, clams, tortoises, turtles, and alligators also do not age biologically.

25. A chicken could outsmart a baby. Chickens comprehend cause-and-effect relationships and understand that objects still exist even after they are hidden from view, which is more than researchers can say for small human children. Chicken power!

26. Manta rays can weigh up to 3,000 pounds. That’s as much as a Toyota Prius!

Every animal is unique, but they all share the same desire to live free from harm. Animals are not ours to eat, wear, experiment on, use for entertainment, or abuse in any other way. You do your thing and let animals do their own weird animal thing, and everybody wins!

Seth MacFarlane Protects Animals on Set

0

As the comedic genius behind the TV show Family Guy and the blockbuster film Ted, Seth MacFarlane knows a thing or two about what’s funny. You know what he doesn’t find funny? The abuse of animals for entertainment.

seth macfarlane featured image

From day one of production on the set of his hilarious new film, A Million Ways to Die in the West, MacFarlane made it clear that in addition to protecting animals from harm, he wouldn’t stand for anything that would cause the animals stress or make them uncomfortable.

In his exclusive interview with PETA’s Lisa Lange, MacFarlane explains, “[I]f it were up to me, that would be the law: that you have to treat animals [well] if you’re doing a movie. And I think at some point, it will be. I think that’s the next big civil rights victory of sorts that will eventually find its way into actuality.”

[A]nything that will even psychologically antagonize an animal, we want to stay away from. And in the age of [computer-generated imagery], you can pretty much do that if you feel like doing it, and I did.

Just like at marine parks and in circuses, animals used in TV shows or movies are exploited and often mistreated. Unfortunately, that familiar “No Animals Were Harmed” stamp of approval doesn’t mean much, as The Hollywood Reporter recently uncovered in its investigation into the American Humane Association.

The good news? With advanced technology like computer-generated imagery and caring filmmakers like Seth MacFarlane leading the way, the suffering of animals for film and television will soon be a thing of the past!

peta2′s annual Libby Awards are in full swing, which means that we’re asking you guys to vote on your favorite peta2 ads, animal-friendly bands, and of course, swoon-worthy celebs to help us decide who we should choose as the winners.

In addition to peta2 nominees such as Disney Channel star China Anne McClain and vegan mama Tia Mowry, lots of other celebs made headlines this week for their own good deeds! Let’s check out the highlights:

The summer set macys thanksgiving day parade

peta2 pals The Summer Set were tapped to fill in for Joan Jett on the South Dakota float in last week’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. The float may have lost one badass vegan rocker in Joan Jett, but it gained a band full of awesome, animal-loving stars! Check out the full performance here.

Don’t forget to vote for your fave animal-friendly celebs in this year’s Libby Awards to let us know who you think we should pick as winners, and be sure to keep up with peta2 on Twitter for all the latest gossip!

Ariana Grande is fast becoming my favorite person … like, ever. She may seem sugary sweet, but don’t let that high pony deceive you. Beneath it all, she’s a kick-ass animal activist! When she’s not praising her vegan diet …
